It’s on…

My DIY tenor sax repair dreams are becoming a reality. Just need to dry the thing out first. Still gathering data on the costs for refinishing and trying to find a similar make/model to see how much a new/functioning one costs. Mine has a serial number and I was able to trace the background of the instrument. It’s roughly 35 years old.

Check out the email from musicmedic.com. They have a kit to help with the repairs!:

Repairing a tenor saxophone

Not My Tenor Sax

Not My Tenor Sax

I played the tenor sax from 4th grade through high school. Life got the better of me and I let it sit for about 10 years. Played on and off for about 6 months, let it sit (in a damp basement) for about 7 years, and just picked it up today.

Upon opening it, I was suffocated by the smell of mildew. Bad news. Messed up pads, cork falling off and my mouthpiece was just a mess. Here are some pics for you. Please note that not only am I a terrible photographer, but I also have a terrible camera. + Continue Reading

Latest Pizza…

Pizza

Pizza

NOTE/UPDATE JANUARY 28, 2009: I’m thinking that the limitations of a conventional oven are preventing my desired result. More later after further analysis.

I’ve been studying and trying different pizza doughs and baking techniques. I’m looking to achieve the perfect crust which, to me, is the thin soft one with bubbly and slightly burnt edges (like the ‘authentic’ type, I believe it’s called Neapolitan). Some people are purists when it comes to the Neapolitan style – San Marzano tomatoes, some fresh buffalo mozzarella, and some chopped fresh basil on the pie as soon as it gets out of the oven. There are many debates about the ‘right’ kind of pizza. I like to put on whatever I can find.  I got the no knead dough recipe via Marc Bittman’s blog. If you want to try it keep in mind the dough process takes 24 hours. More pictures after the jump. + Continue Reading

To Reach the Clouds

To Reach the Clouds

To Reach the Clouds

Philippe Petit is one of those people you should know about for cocktail conversation. To Reach the Clouds is a movie and it’s an absolutely amazing story of vision, faith, focus, and dedication.

From a very early age (before hitting double digits I believe) this guy saw a mock up of the gone but not forgotten World Trade Center (Twin Towers) in NYC. He told himself then and there – before they were even built – that he was going to walk a tightrope between the 2 buildings. Nuts? Yes. Impossible? No.

If anyone or group is trying to do similar, keep this in mind – aside from the amazing ability, + Continue Reading
