Computer Surgery
I have a late-model MacBook Pro 15″ (pre-”Unibody” aka MacBookPro3,1) which has essentially become a home for music and photos and little else. With only 160 GBs of space in a music and photo loving house, the digital home has become quite limited.
Like anyone else, I can be seduced by the latest technology, and spent some time salivating over the latest greatest Macs, but as a student, I just could not justify purchasing a new machine.
I ordered a ‘DIY KIT: 500GB 7200RPM HD for MacBook, MacBook Pro (or PC Notebook)+OWC Express‘ from them and the process from ordering, to unpacking, to installing took me less than 45 minutes. The cost? $99.87 complete (shipping and tax). This gives me more than three times the 160GB base install.
For me, OWC hit the trifecta:
- Value (Quality and Price) – a top-shelf product at a deeply discounted price
- Support – OWC’s customer support on both selecting the product and installing it was simple, fast and correct (open 24 hours fyi)
- Ease – installing a new hard-drive is not impossible, but does fall under the ‘semi complex’ category.
FULL DISCLOSURE: my day-to-day machine is a Toshiba with Windows 7 and I LOVE IT but before switching I was a devout Mac user and that is where I keep media and intend to keep it.
